WINSTON COUNTY - A “one to one” initiative has paid off for the Winston County School System, thanks to the Resource Conservation and Development of Northwest Alabama council association.

Haleyville hires new firefighters

HALEYVILLE - Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri told Haleyville City Council members during the June 3, meeting that he has hired five new volunteer firemen.  They are Branden Roberts, Cameron Miller, Kyle Doss, Ethan McBroom and Blane Godsey.  They will be paid at a rate of $17.83 per call.  The only item on the council’s agenda was approving minutes from May 20.

HALEYVILLE  - Bo Knight, described as knowing the value of hard work and never expecting from others what he is willing to give, was honored with thunderous applause, when he came forward to receive the highly coveted Alumnus of the Year award at the city’s annual luncheon Saturday, June 1.

ADDISON - Retired Addison Police Chief Donald Baker was killed Monday afternoon, June 3, in a motorcycle accident in the vicinity of Dunlap, Tennessee.  Baker's body was returned to Nichols Funeral Home in Addison Monday afternoon in a large convoy comprised by law enforcement officers from across Winston County and the surrounding area.

Denton named elite tourism professional

NATURAL BRIDGE - An individual from Winston County has been named a North Alabama Elite Tourism Professional, a program of the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA) where tourism employees demonstrating outstanding customer service and hospitality in the 16-county North Alabama region are recognized in celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week.

HALEYVILLE - In a special called meeting Friday, May 31, Davey Alan Reed was hired by a unanimous vote of the Haleyville Board of Education as the new principal of Haleyville High School for the 2019-2020 school year effective June 3.

MONTGOMERY - In a major step toward continued expansion of broadband internet service in rural Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey today signed Senate Bill 90 into law. Sponsored by Senator Clay Scofield (R-Guntersville), SB90 expands an existing grant program under the Alabama Broadband Accessibility Fund, which was established by the Alabama Legislature in 2018.

HALEYVILLE - When the Haleyville Water Works and Sewer Board did not receive the principal forgiveness of $500,000 on a $1.5 million loan, not all of the items could be completed at this time. The HWWSB approved a resolution for one of the scenarios given by Engineer Calvin Cassady in the amount of $1,182,100, at their meeting, Tuesday, May 28, for the 2019 “Clean Water State Revolving Fund” loan.

Crane Hill couple pleads guilty to tax fraud

CRANE HILL - A Crane Hill couple pleaded guilty yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama to failing to pay over employment taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), announced Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town for the Northern District of Alabama.

HALEYVILLE - Friday morning, May 24, Fire Chief Terrell Baccus was in the area of 21st Street and Alabama Avenue, when he saw black smoke billowing from the south Haleyville area.

“I could tell it was more than a controlled burn. I called dispatch. They said they didn't have any reports of any controlled burn, so I came and inspected it and found a structure fire fully involved,” Chief Baccus stated.
