Mike Gilbreath Memorial Park temporarily closed during renovation project


Roots of trees through the years have heavily damaged the walking track at the park.
DOUBLE SPRINGS  - A community park, named in honor of a man who gave much service to his community, was temporarily closed beginning Feb. 13,  while its first major renovation, planned at least the past two years, is finally taking place.

HALEYVILLE - What began as an expansion of the Haleyville High School nurse's station thanks to state windfall monies has led to a multi-faceted project displaying student talent as a memorial to Sr. Airman Mark Forester, who was killed in the line of duty in 2010.

Vehicle stalls across flooded creek

LYNN - Winston County has received a lot of rain this week, especially Wednesday, Feb. 12, with the Haleyville weather station of the National Weather Service reporting just over two inches of rain that day alone. When a storm system comes through with heavy rain involved, there are several places in southwest Winston near Lynn which flood. Splunge and Browns creeks, both flowing under County Road 339 normally, flow over the road in the low-lying area, as the water channel cannot handle the load.

Town Council hires electrician to check out Twin Forks during temporary closure

BEAR CREEK - The Bear Creek Town Council voted at their regular meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, to hire Chester Barber as the electrician to check out Twin Forks campsites,  making sure everything is in order while the park is temporarily closed for general maintenance.

Burkett winner of county spelling bee

Winston County Spelling Bee winners are champion John Paul Burkett, of Lynn High School, and Grant Banks, of Meek High School. The winning champion word is “mutter.”

LYNN - It took 17 rounds for a winner to be declared in the 2020 Winston County Spelling Bee, held Friday, Feb. 7, at Lynn Elementary School. John Paul Burkett, of Lynn High School, was the winner with Grant Banks of Meek High School as the runner-up. The championship word was mutter.

Man loses everything in house fire
