GUIN – Phillips’ earned its third consecutive Marion County Varsity Girls Basketball title with a 67-40 win over Winfield on Friday, Jan. 25.
The game was between two of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Top 5 teams in Classes 1A and 3A.
The She Bears entered the contest ranked No. 4 in Class 1A while the Lady Pirates were the second-ranked team in Class 3A.
Phillips jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter before closing the period with a 21-6 advantage. The Lady Pirates trimmed Phillips’ halftime lead to 12 points with a 15-12 second quarter.
The She Bears extended their lead in the third quarter with a 22-12 score before Phillips capped the win with a 12-7 fourth to earn the 67-40 win.
The She Bears’ Gracie Hallman scored a game-high 18 points. The tournament’s most valuable player added nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Amber Markham had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She added three blocks, two steals and two assists.
Ally McCollum also recorded a double-double by registering 12 points and 13 rebounds. She also had three assists and a block.
Baily Bishop had 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. Lexie Dishner had nine points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Caitlin Martin connected on a free-throw attempt for one point, pulled down a rebound and dished out an assist.
Tuesday, Jan. 22
GUIN - Phillips toppled Hamilton 68-35 in the second round of the county tournament.
The She Bears’ Hallman finished with a team-high 17 points. She added five steals and three assists.
McCollum recorded a double-double with 16 points and 19 rebounds. She also had a steal and a block.
Dishner contributed 11 points, six assists, three steals and two rebounds.
Bishop added nine points, four rebounds, three blocks, one assist and a steal.
Allie Veal and Martin each had five points. Veal added three rebounds while Martin had three assists, two steals and two rebounds.
Mary Ashton Hyde had three points, two rebounds and two steals. Markham had two points, nine rebounds, three steals, three assists and a block.
Monday, Jan. 21
GUIN - Phillips defeated Brilliant 75-32 in the opening round of the county tournament.
The She Bears’ McCollum finished with a double-double and a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds. She added three steals and an assist.
Hallman added 26 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Bishop recorded eight points, nine rebounds and two steals. Hyde added five points, six rebounds, one assist and a steal.
Markham and Martin scored three points each. Markham added eight rebounds, three assists and a steal. Martin had five steals, one rebound and an assist.
Dishner had two points, seven steals, six assists and two rebounds. Veal added two rebounds and a steal.
