WINSTON COUNTY - 2019 is Alabama’s bicentennial, and the Alabamian is planning a special edition to celebrate our coverage area’s contribution to not only our great state’s history, but what makes Winston County such a great place to live today.
“Winston: Then & Now” will be a tabbed special section appearing in the April 24, edition of the Alabamian. This section will include a treasure trove of information regarding Winston County - both past and present - as well as Bear Creek.
“We want this section to not only honor Winston County and Bear Creek’s integral contributions to our state’s rich history and heritage, but also celebrate where we are presently and where we are heading in the future,” Alabamian Managing Editor Shelly Hess said.
“Winston: Then & Now” will feature historical profiles of Winston County, its cities and towns - Haleyville, Double Springs, Addison, Lynn, Arley and Natural Bridge - Bear Creek and smaller communities within our coverage area. The section will also include in-depth interviews with local government officials regarding Winston County and local municipalities.
“This will be a great opportunity to spotlight all of the cities and towns we cover,” Hess said.
With the area’s schools being such an important part of what shapes the identities of Winston County communities and Bear Creek, the Alabamian will also be writing articles about each school in our coverage area for this special section. In addition, “Winston: Then & Now” will include hundreds of photos, many of them vintage or historic, showing the journey our area has taken through the decades.
The Alabama Bicentennial Commission has given its endorsement to the Alabamian’s special section, making its publication a sanctioned event of the bicentennial.
“It is quite an honor to have received this endorsement from the Alabama Bicentennial Commission,” Hess said. “The extraordinary group of men and women who comprise this group have worked tremendously hard to make the celebration of our state’s 200th birthday into a moment to reflect, educate, celebrate and take pride in where we live. We are truly honored to be a small part of this celebration.”
“Winston: Then & Now” is open to area churches, civic groups and businesses to include their histories, as well as the exciting things that are going on within their respective organizations today.
