HOOVER - The Meek High School Band has truly lived up to its name - The Band of Champions - by earning top honors in 1A at the second annual Alabama State Marching Band Championship.
The Band of Champions were not alone in bringing home trophies to Winston County. The Haleyville High School Roaring Lion Band was named runner-up in Class 4A during the competition, scoring an 83.44, just behind Oak Grove High School’s 86.
Last year marked the first year a statewide championship for marching bands had been held. This year, at least 33 bands from across the state were judged at two locations - the Hoover Met and Pelham High School - on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Meek Band of Champions and HHS Roaring Lion Band both performed at the Hoover Met.
The Alabama State Marching Band Championship is growing, with plans to have the event sanctioned by the Alabama Bandmasters Association.
The state competition is similar to district level competitions, in which bands commonly participate, but also features a different style of judging instead of panel judging.
The state level competition judging was on such items as musical content, marching, general effect, percussion and color guard. In fact, judges were standing on the field monitoring every apsect of the bands’ performances and movements.
