Winston County Sheriff's Office warns residents of local scam

DOUBLE SPRINGS - The Winston County Sheriff's Office is warning residents not to fall for a scam that is current circulating where the scammers claim they are with the sheriff's office.

Numerous Winston County residents have notified the sheriff's office, stating that they had been contacted by persons claiming to be with the Winston County Sheriff's Office.  Winston County Sheriff Horace Moore said this a complete and total scam.

"We do not call people for fundraisers or warrants.  When my investigators call someone, they normally are returning phone calls or following up on a case.  Most cases are done in person,"  Moore said.

Moore said that the Winston County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the matter.  They ask that anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be with the Winston County Sheriff's Office to take down the number as it appears on their caller ID and report it to the sheriff's office by calling (205) 489-2115.

"We would like to thank the community for making us aware of this scam,"  Moore said.
