Dr. Aubrey Eugene Terry was born near Leighton on September 9, 1927. He graduated from Colbert County High School and the University of Alabama, receiving both his B.S. degree and an M.D. (1955). Following an internship, he completed a pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Terry was privileged to practice medicine in Russellville for over 50 years. He was beloved by his patients and respected by his colleagues.
Active in his community and state, Dr. Terry served as president of the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association (1991-1993). He was elected for two terms to the Alabama State Board of Censors, the governing body for physicians. He served as a clinical assistant professor of community medicine at the University of Alabama. Of the many awards he received, he was most proud of the A.H. Robbins Physician Recognition Award for Outstanding Community Service, given by the Alabama State Medical Association (1969).
Other service includes 20+ years on the Russellville City School Board, president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Civitan Club and a very proud deacon of First Baptist Church, Russellville.
Dr. Terry had numerous interests. As a young man, he was an accomplished basketball player. Later, he became an avid golfer, sinking two holes in one! He also loved Alabama football.
Dr. Terry was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman during WW II. He married his wife, Hettie Butler Terry, in 1948. They remained devoted to one another for over 60 years until her death in 2016.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ludie Terry and his brother, Dr. Williard Terry.
Dr. Terry is survived by his daughter, Lesa Terry Walsh (Dr. James Timothy); his granddaughter, Caitlin Walsh; one brother, Bill Terry; his sister, Mary Hester and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from noon - 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Russellville. His funeral will follow at 1 p.m., jointly officiated by Dr. Gene Balding and Brother Chase Dowdy. Interment will be at the Franklin Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Pinkard Funeral Home will direct.
