Roe Morris Hughes, 89, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025. Roe was born in Franklin County on April 8, 1935. He was a member of Belgreen Church of Christ prior to being a long-time member of Five Points Church of Christ for many years.
Roe retired from Northwest Junior College aka Northwest-Shoals College, where he was a maintenance supervisor and campus security at the Phil Campbell and Tuscumbia campuses. He assisted the nursing department instructor, Ms. Doris, with transportation of equipment and also received his EMT certification.
He was an avid outdoorsman and a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed cattle farming and a lifetime passion of hunting, fishing and music. He enjoyed playing the guitar, fiddle, mandolin and his harmonics. He was a member/director of the Franklin County Cattlemen's Association and the 2007 Cattlemen of the Year award recipient.
Roe was also involved in many other activities and organizations around the community, including serving on the board for the Franklin County Water Authority and the board for Dempsey Cemetery. He was a member of the Belgreen Volunteer Fire Department and also volunteered at Cypress Cove Farm, where he greatly enjoyed teaching the children about farming and nature. Roe enjoyed studying and researching his "Hughes and Massey" family ancestry. He volunteered and assisted with activities at the Rustic Youth Camp. Roe and Linda were always volunteering and participating with Belgreen School, the community and other county activities.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Linda Hargett Hughes; infant son, Gillie Morris Hughes; parents, Clarence V. Hughes and Birdie Massey Hughes; brother-in-law, Glen Hargett and sister-in-law, Jewel Hargett Holcomb.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Hughes (Ray); two stepchildren, Amber Ray Thompson (Seth) and Blake Ray (Talea); great-grandchildren, Sydney Thompson, Carter Thompson, Hadley Ray and Ava Ray and very special loved David Ray; brothers-in-law, Jimmy Hargett (Frances) and Jack Hargett (Bonnie) sister-in-law, Brenda Bragwell and a host of loving cousins, beloved friends and community.
Pallbearers will be Royce Massey, Billy Entrekin, Darryl Hargett, Blake Ray, Seth Thompson and Carter Thompson.
His funeral will be Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m., with the funeral at 2 p.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home in Russellville. Brother Don Miller will be officiating. Burial will be at Dempsey Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the home health nurses, physical therapists, CNAs, nurses and staff, preferred hospice and Chaplain Wesley Thompson for their kindness, care, and compassion. Also, a thanks to Pinkard Funeral Home for assisting the family.
