Billy Ray Umphrey, 86, of Cullman, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Cullman Regional Medical Center in Cullman.
Ray was born September 30, 1938 to Alvin and Myrtle Umphrey. He was a deacon at Seventh Street Baptist Church in Cullman. Prior to moving to Cullman and joining Seventh Street Baptist Church, Ray lived in the Nesmith community and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 1-2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Nesmith, where his funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Brother Chris Godbee and Brother Jeff Wiggins will officiate. Nichols Funeral Home will direct.
Ray was survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Umphrey; daughter, Kathryn Privett; son, Michael (Patricia) Umphrey; grandchildren, Katie Brandon, Emily (Cameron) Berryhill, Megan (Nathan) Shedd, Casey (Jeremy) Haycraft, Matthew (Emily) Umphrey and Michael Bradley (Sarah) Umphrey; great-grandchildren, Griffin Berryhill, Grant Berryhill, Everly Berryhill, Jack Berryhill, Emalyn Berryhill, Mattie Johnson, Drake Johnson, Novie Shedd, Adylee Summers, Kynlee Summers and Masyn Haycraft; sister, Joan Simmons and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Myrtle Umphrey; sister, Bobbie Nell Cleghorn; brothers-in-law, Bobby Cleghorn and Leon Simmons and son-in-law, Kerry Privett.
