HALEYVILLE - Questions about finances on specific items took the forefront of discussion at the June 23, work session of the Haleyville Board of Education.
The two primary questions from board members concerned a supplement a coach was receiving for doing work for the new video board or jumbotron to be located at the Haleyville High School football stadium and whether or not the board should approve funding based on a want or a need regarding a side-by-side for the grounds and maintenance department.
“In looking over the high school athletic supplements, I am seeing where we have the defensive coordinator, but he is also the field video recording guy. (He is) getting additional monies for that,” Board Member Boo Haughton began.
Coach Chuck Moody in the past had been filming sports practices and activities from the press box, but the sports program has since been using some software, which has replaced the need for a person to actually do the filming, school officials explained.
Coach Alex DeLeon, defensive coordinator for the football team--who is working on a new video board, and to update and create commercials utilizing Hudl for a new jumbo screen being planned for the high school football stadium--will now be paid a $2,000 supplement, which board members were questioning, officials added.
In other words, board members were questioning that, if the sports program was using the new Hudl software instead of a person filming from the press box, why was the $2,000 supplement still being paid.

Bo Culver, athletic director for Haleyville City Schools, explained to the board that the position for video recording has been known in the past as a film/assist.
“We have now purchased Hudl Sideline (program),” Culver explained. “The worry that I have coming in is now, we have to put commercials together, edit those commercials then put a product out there that people are going to be proud of.
“I did not see it wise to continue using those funds for a video/assist,” Culver added.
The plan is for DeLeon, who already does graphics for the program, to help do programs and put together commercials for the video board, Culver continued.
“And I intended for that to be a conversation,” Culver noted.
“So that has nothing to do with Coach Moody’s old position,” board member Chad Tidwell questioned.
“Coach Moody was in that position as a film/assist, yes sir,” Culver responded.
“Did we not create that,? Tidwell then asked.
“It was a full supplement and stuff, yes sir,” responded Culver, explaining that Moody, due to driving a bus, was not able to do the position ful- time.
“This was not costing us anything extra  than what we paid last year,” Culver pointed out. “It’s not an addition. It’s just a reappropriation of funds.  If you say we are not going to do that, I’ll say, yes sir, yes ma’am.
“That is not a hill that I think myself or Alex would die on,” Culver continued. “It’s not costing us any more money.”
“Describe to me what that film video recording function is,” Haughton then asked Culver.
Culver explained that when businesses do an advertisement, their ads are displayed on the video board, which requires an editing process.
“Obviously, with the time restraints of what we are required to do during the day, myself and Alex, that is not something we want Alex to be working on (during the work day),” Culver said.
HCS Interim Superintendent Candy Garner then noted DeLeon does a phenomenal job
