HELICON       -  Just over two years after plans for  a monument honoring veterans was announced for the Helicon community, plans are now in full swing for its construction.
A dinner at the Arley/Smith Lake Community Center on Helicon Road Friday, Aug. 2, will kick off fundraising efforts for the monument.  The dinner, at $15 per plate, will be from 3-6 p.m. with plates including meat choices of spaghetti bake, chicken ritz or pork loin, two vegetables (broccoli salad, loaded potato casserole, squash casserole, turnip greens, pinto beans or corn,) a roll or cornbread, dessert and a drink served by members of the Arley American Legion, organizers said.  The dinner will be carryout only.
All of the proceeds raised from the supper will go toward a project that is already becoming more visible just past the Helicon Fire Department off County Road 77.
Donations will also be accepted at the dinner to be used toward construction of the monument, which will be a large, granite stone etched with the names of veterans who were killed in action at the site where an old store once stood.
“Come buy a plate, and if people decide they want to give, then they give,”  (State Representative Tim Wadsworth said.
