Winston County memories of April 3, 1974 tornado sought

Catastrophic damage in the Delmar area following the April 3, 1974, tonrado, which left five people dead in Winston County.

WINSTON COUNTY - April 3, 1974, was one of the darkest moments in local history.  It was on that night that an F5 tornado - part of a larger, two-day national outbreak of tornadoes - decimated Guin before moving into Winston County, leaving a path of death and destruction in its wake.
Memories from that terrible day are currently being collected to be preserved in an in-depth narrative at tornadotalk.com, a website dedicated to documenting the history of tornadoes in the United States, along with the memories of those who survived them.  Tornado Talk creator Jennifer Narramore has been working to construct an in-depth, online narrative of the tornado, which began its deadly path in Lowndes County, Miss.,  staying on the ground through Morgan County in Alabama.  The tornado claimed the lives of 30 people - including five in Winston County and 23 in Marion County.  Narramore’s goal is to make the narrative the most detailed collection of information regarding the tornado available.
Narramore noted that while she has been able to gather some information regarding the destruction in Winston County from the tornado, there are some gaps in the information, which she is hoping local residents can help fill.  Specifically, Narramore would like to talk with families in the Delmar and Macedonia areas who may have been hit by the tornado.
“We have general mentions of families and some photos from archived newspapers, but limited details,”  Narramore said.  “It would be great to verify that we have the correct people and perhaps a general location of where their residence was for mapping purposes.”
Families and descendants of families who were directly affected by the April 3, 1974, tornado who would like to contribute to this project can contact Narramore by email at jennarramore@tornadotalk.com.
