DELMAR - A suspect tore a hole in the back wall of Delmar Quick Stop early Friday morning, Oct. 12, in order to gain access into the store, where all of the cigarettes were cleaned out as well as all of the cash taken from the store’s ATM machine.
A crowbar was most likely used to pry away the metal siding of the building, creating a hole two feet wide and four feet tall, tearing also through insulation, for the suspect to get in the store, noted Lt. Tim Steien, investigator with the Haleyville Police Department.
Once inside the suspect or suspects cleaned out the store’s entire supply of cigarettes, and used the possible crowbar to break into the ATM machine, where an undetermined amount of cash was taken, officials added.
“They opened up the cash register,” noted the store clerk, who discovered the break-in when she came to work at 4 a.m. Friday.
Store officials, through checking with their equipment, were able to determine that the cash register was opened around 2:23 a.m., but no cash was kept inside.
“They got away with rolled change, but they didn’t take that change (in the cash register),” the clerk said.
The clerk noticed something strange when she had arrived that morning.
“When I walked up to the door, I put the key in. I never did unlock the door. I noticed something lying in the floor,” the clerk said, referring to a part of the ATM machine that had been broken off.
The clerk then noticed all of the store’s cigarettes had been cleaned out of their shelves behind the counter.
“I just got my order in Tuesday and on that order I had 57 cartons,” the clerk said, adding she also had a back stock of cigarettes in the store. The suspect took both cartons and packs of cigarettes, she stated.
Also missing where several boxes of Goodies powder from the shelve, according to the clerk.
Those who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or suspicious activity at the Delmar Quick Stop in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 12, are urged to contact the Haleyville Police Department at 205-486-5201.
