Members of the Haleyville Fire Department, suited up in protective gear, wash off a transport truck that was hauling animal by-products on Highway 13 when it lost a portion of its load Tuesday morning.
HALEYVILLE - A trip through Haleyville during the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 8, turned into a potentially hazardous situation for a Pilgrim's Pride transport service driver, but the quick action and training of first responders kept the situation from becoming too serious.
The driver of the Kenworth transport truck was headed south on Highway 13 in the vicinity of the Haleyville Fire Department when he had to stop quickly at a red light, losing a portion of his load of tens of thousands of pounds of animal by-products that he was transporting to Adamsville to the landfill. The driver was able to get his vehicle off the road and call for help, with Haleyville Police and Haleyville Fire quickly responding. The road was shut down to one lane due to the spill and the nature of the material that spilled, with the road eventually having to be completely shut down for some time. Also responding were the Winston County and Franklin County Emergency Management Agencies and the Alabama Department of Transportation. Actions were taken to safely prevent the material from reaching nearby streams as it was removed from the roadway.
