HALEYVILLE -Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri called a meeting of not only department heads, but officials from various city agencies and departments ahead of a severe weather threat forecasted for this weekend.
Based on sforecast modules, Sunseri instructed his department heads and city entities to begin preparing that day and into Friday, ahead of the storm, to make sure all of their equipment and services were ready. If the area goes under a tornado watch, all local shelters will be opened and manned by city employees.
“What they're predicting right now is winds up to 60 miles per hour,” Sunseri said. “Sixty mile an hour winds are just as bad as a tornado.”
During the preparation time, all storm shelters should be inspected to make sure they are equipped with adequate supplies, water, as well as generators checked, the mayor instructed. If the police department is called out to an incident or to man a roadblock, the mayor will call out the water department and rescue squad to help relieve those officers.
“I can't tie up all of our police officers doing roadblocks,” the mayor said.
Sunseri also urged all city departments to fill their vehicles up with gasoline, with a plan to rotate vehicles if needed.
“Watch the weather forecast,” he told them. “Make sure all of your people know where to be and when to be there.” People on Friday need to check on their neighbors, especially those who are older or are homebound, the mayor also said.
