No Empty Bowls this year

DOUBLE SPRINGS    -  The annual Empty Bowls fundraising event, benefiting the Winston County Arts Council and Main Street Ministries will miss the second year in its 11 year run, due to unforeseen circumstances.
The event, which has been held in February the past two to three years, will not be held this month, due to organizers being busy with ongoing renovations at the Looney’s Amphitheater Complex and Cultural Center, according to J.D. Snoddy, president of boards for both the arts council and Main Street Ministries.
The arts council owns the Looney’s complex and has been busy doing renovations and organizing events to be held there, organizers said.
“Also, the pottery shop over at Meek School has no heat in it,” Snoddy pointed out, “so we haven’t been able to make the bowls, because they have not had any heat all winter.”
A large part of the Empty Bowls planning is the making of decorative pottery bowls at the Winston County Pottery Workshop held at the old field house in Meek High School in Arley, organizers indicated.
The bowls are displayed each year at the Empty Bowls event, which features chefs, restaurants, and individuals making a variety of soups for the public to try.
Those who purchase tickets to enter the event can pick up a handcrafted bowl on display from the pottery workshop.
The Winston County Arts Council will have a special-called meeting to discuss when to reschedule the Empty Bowls event, which possibly will be held in the fall due to the general elections held in November, Snoddy stated.
The date for this special meeting has not been set, according to Snoddy.
