HALEYVILLE - Customers of the Haleyville Water Works and Sewer Board (HWWSB) will soon see contractors arriving at their homes and businesses to inspect the water lines on both sides of the meters as part of a Lead and Copper Materials Inventory.
The HWWSB will hold a public meeting on this inventory and its lead line replacement project at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, July 11, at the HWWSB conference room at 2015 20th Street. HWWSB officials will answer questions and address any concerns. Meanwhile, an Environmental Information Document for the project is available at the HWWSB office.
The inventory is a requirement of the Environmental Protection Agency’s December, 2021, revisions to its Lead and Cooper Rule (LCRR).
By October 16, it must be completed and its findings submitted to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, which is in charge of implementing the LCRR in Alabama.
ADEM must verify that the public meeting took place before giving HWWSB permission to proceed with the inventory, so its exact start date is yet to be determined.
The purpose of the inventory is to identify any water lines that may contain lead which, at elevated levels in drinking water, can cause serious health problems, particularly in children and pregnant women.
