Wreaths Across America Day December 13 at Winston Memorial Cemetery

HALEYVILLE - Wreaths Across America Day will be Saturday,  Dec. 13, and Whitehead Post and Unit 33 of the American Legion in Haleyville will be participating through a powerful ceremony at Winston Memorial Cemetery.
The Auxiliary recently took orders for wreaths to be placed on the graves of veterans buried at Winston Memorial Cemetery, as well as took orders for wreaths to be placed on graves at other cemeteries in the area.  For those who ordered a wreath to be placed on a cemetery other than Winston Memorial, those wreaths can be picked up Friday, Dec. 12, from 4-6 p.m. at the American Legion Post, located on Highway 13 North in Haleyville.
Families who purchased wreaths to be placed at Winston Memorial are encouraged to be at the American Legion Post Saturday morning no later than 10:30 a.m. to form a procession, which will be led by police escort to Winston Memorial Cemetery, located on Highway 195.
Once at the cemetery, everyone will gather inside the mausoleum for the ceremony, which will be led by dignitaries and members of the Whitehead Post and Unit.  Post Commander Joel Carranza will give the welcome, and American Legion Auxiliary District 14 President and Whitehead Unit President Rebecca Linam will read the honor roll. After the honor roll is read, family members who ordered wreaths will be presented their wreaths to place on their loved one(s’) graves.
Following the laying of the wreaths, American Legion Adjutant Mickey Holdbrooks will ring the honor bell and Brian Harper will play “Taps.”
Linam believes the ceremony is a great opportunity for families not only to gather together and remember their loved ones and their service to our nation, but to teach younger generations .
“This gives families an opportunity to teach family history,”  Linam said.  It also helps to teach patriotism and honor our veterans, Linam added.
Whitehead Unit and Post Members would like to thank Shorty Burrell and the staff of Winston Memorial Cemetery for all their assistance in this ceremony each year.
The ceremony is open to all interested persons to attend.   For more information, contact Linam at (205) 552-2868.
