The Smith Lake School offering free creative writing class by new author

ARLEY - Caleb Johnson, author of the recently released book “Treeborne,” will be giving free creative writing classes to high school students June 25 through June 29, 2018, at the Arley Public Library. The class will not meet on Wednesday of that week.

The class has been dubbed the Smith Lake School. This will be the first year the class is being offered, and several have already signed up. Seats are limited, and prospective attendees are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
To sign up, send an e-mail to with your name, age and a sentence or two on why writing is enjoyable.

The class will be offered from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Topics will focus on prose with each day focused on a writer crafts of settings, characters, etc.

“Over the course of the week, they will have learned a set of writing skills they can use in pursuing whatever kind of stories they’re interested in telling,” Johnson said.

“This is something I hope to do every year. I would like to grow it. The South and Alabama and Winston County in particular gave me so much as a storyteller, and I want to give back, even if it’s in a small way to my people and my home there.”
