Haleyville officials questioned about Corsicana facility closing

HALEYVILLE - The closure of Corsicana Bedding in Haleyville was a topic of discussion near the end of the Haleyville City Council’s Sept. 17, meeting, with some of the points made during the meeting disputed by Corsicana corporate officials.

Valeria Taylor asked Mayor Ken Sunseri about the recent closing of Corsicana Bedding - which was often referred to as Therapedic locally because the company was previously owned by Therapedic - wondering if the company reached out to the city before closing the plant, which left over 30 people unemployed, according to Sunseri.

“I never heard the first word from them,”  Sunseri told Taylor.

“That’s sad,”  Taylor replied.

According to Jack Kocks, vice president of human resources of Corsicana Mattress Company, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Corsicana had operated the Haleyville facility for approximately 10 years, taking over mattress production in the facility from another company that had considered closing the plant at that time.  The company employed 46 in Haleyville at the time it closed, according to Kocks.

“Corsicana Mattress Company's decision to close the Haleyville plant was a business decision predicated on what the company deemed to be in the best interest of our employees, customers and owners.  Production at the Haleyville plant had been in decline for a variety of reasons and the company felt transitioning that production to our facilities in Tennessee and Florida would provide transportation, logistic and scheduling efficiencies along with improved overall service to our customers,”  Kocks said.

According to Kocks, Corsicana worked closely with representatives from the State of Alabama and the Hamilton Career Center to ensure that all employees impacted by the closure were offered job search assistance and training.
