Baker’s essay wins state

DOUBLE SPRINGS - An essay written by Jonathan Baker, a senior at Winston County High School, has won not just district, but state competition and is now headed to Washington, D.C. for national competition.
The essay subject is “Why My Vote Matters” and was written for the Voice of Democracy contest, sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars.
“I was standing in my kitchen when I learned I had won the state competition and had an opportunity to compete in the national contest,” Baker explained. “Mr. Dwight Thomas (VFW post commander at Delmar) called me, and I was so excited to know that my speech had been chosen to compete and represent Alabama!”
