Green resigns from Bear Creek Council

BEAR CREEK   - The Town of Bear Creek is now left with a second council vacancy in less than a year  after Daniel Green announced he was resigning at the Tuesday, Aug. 6, council meeting.
Green’s resignation, which was made vocally at the end of the council meeting, was based on a job relocation, he said. The resignation came  10 months after Chris Hyde resigned from the council in October, 2018.
Hyde’s position, however, was never filled. The council, according to law, could have filled the vacant seat up to 60 days after the vacancy was declared.
A vacancy in the office of council member in any Class 7 or Class 8 municipality (population 5,999 or less) shall be filled by the city council at the next regular meeting or any subsequent meeting of the council, according to Alabama Code Section 11-44G-1. Bear Creek, according to town attorney Cole Christopher, falls under a Class 8 municipality.
If the vacancy is not filled within 60 days after it occurs, each existing council member, including the mayor, shall submit a name to the governor for appointment, the Code reads.
