DOUBLE SPRINGS - Joel Mize, guest speaker at the Feb. 20, Winston County Genealogical Society meeting in Double Springs, is preparing a guided convoy tour for historic Byler Road on Saturday, Mar. 17, nearly 200 years after its inception.
Alabama became a state on Dec. 14, 1819, and two days later, the first state road was authorized and approved by Governor William Wyatt Bibb. Carrying the name of its builder, John Byler, the road began at Bainbridge on the Jackson Military Highway in Lauderdale County, heading in a southern direction and ending in Northport in Tuscaloosa County.
