DOUBLE SPRINGS - The Winston County Board of Education met Thursday, June 11, and approved a short list of employee transfers and three recommendations for employment.
Addison Elementary School Principal Jeff Scott was hired as transportation supervisor at the bus garage for the school system, taking over from Jeff Hendrix. Scott’s hire date was effective June 11.
Two other new hires were Stacey Dryer and Mandy Box as elementary teachers at DSES effective in August.
Brian Wakefield, current assistant principal at Winston County High School, is being transferred to Double Springs Middle School in the same position. Kristy Whitman is being transferred from Meek high and elementary schools to Double Springs Elementary School.
Kelly Cook will be moving from Addison Elementary School to Addison High School, and Casey Privett will continue at AES only.
Byron Tuggle, agriscience teacher at WCHS, will now serve in that capacity half time at WCHS and half time at AHS.
All of the mentioned transfers will become effective in August, once the new school year begins.
Winston County Schools Superintendent Greg Pendley mentioned the calendar for the 2020-2021 school year should be ready for publishing soon.
“Hopefully, we’ll be able to have a good understanding (about the start date for school),” Pendley said, indicating this date could be Aug. 17, instead of Aug. 3, which was the date set before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the past school year.
“There are a lot of things we could have to do. It will be a logistical nightmare if things continue to hold.” A conference call with State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey is scheduled for later this week.
An updated contracted services list, minutes and budget amendment approvals were the only other items discussed at the meeting.
“We do one budget meeting per year, and that is to correct our actual balances to last year’s ending, (including) any carry over in federal funds, Title I, special ed and any new grants received since the budget was proven,” Andy McKay, chief financial services officer, said concerning the budget amendment.
All school board members were present for the meeting except Lamar Frith.
