Free gun locks for Lynn residents

LYNN     - Those who think that simply hiding a firearm is enough to keep it away from children are sadly mistaken.
Efforts are being made in Lynn to make sure that cable-style gun lock devices are available free of charge to residents.  The Lynn Police Department has partnered with  Project ChildSafe to distribute 100 firearm safety kits beginning today, Wednesday, Feb. 1, with the kits available at Lynn Town Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  The gun locks will be available at Lynn Town Hall during business hours Monday through Friday until the supply is gone. The gun locks are made for pistols, as well as shotguns and rifles.
Lynn Police Chief Bryan Kirkpatrick said no more than two gun locks should be picked up per household in order to have an adequate amount for others.
“We have a lot of gun owners in the area.  It is our responsibility to protect our children. These locks are just one step to take care of our children,”  Kirkpatrick said.
“Hiding a gun in a closet, drawer or similar location is not safe storage,” Project ChildSafe points out in its messaging. “Children are extremely curious and might find a gun in your home you thought was safely hidden or inaccessible.”

The locks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.  When the supply is depleted, Kirkpatrick will check with Project ChildSafe to see if more can be delivered to be distributed, based on need.
