DOUBLE SPRINGS - As the autumn season officially begins on Sunday, Sept. 22, thoughts turn to cooler weather, and with cooler weather, come thoughts of soup.
The public will have a chance to sample a wide variety and style of soups from among 25 vendors at the 12th annual Empty Bowls dinner set Thursday, Oct. 3, 5 p.m. at the Double Springs Municipal Building, as the largest fundraiser for the Winston County Arts Council and Main Street Ministries.
Tickets of $15 for adults, $10 for children age 12 and under, will be available at the door as well as at the Arley Public Library, Rosey Posey’s Flower Shop in Double Springs, as well as from any arts council member or volunteer with Main Street Ministries.
Children under three will be admitted free of charge, according to organizers.
The event will feature not just a sampling of soups but also a display for colorful handcrafted bowls from the Winston County Pottery Workshop, that can be picked up, with each ticket holder receiving a free bowl, organizers said.
Each additional bowl can be purchased for $15, with all proceeds from the evening divided evenly between the arts council and Main Street Ministries, they added.
Sandra Heaven, teaches both students and adults how to make handcrafted bowls at the Winston County Pottery Workshop located on the campus of Meek School in Arley.
“Mostly, adults make the bowls for Empty Bowls,” Heaven noted, adding that 500 bowls are made for the event each year.
New to the Empty Bowls event this year is a watercolor art show, where works of art can be purchased for $20 to $25 each, as well as framing demonstrations held on site.
