WINSTON COUNTY- Winston County Commission Chairman David Cummings reported at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday January 11, that all Winston County roads were deemed passable, but a travel advisory was still listed due to ice lingering on roads and bridges.
"Travel is not advised, but if necessary, use extreme caution due to the potential of slick roads, bridges and black ice," Cummings stated.
Residents seemed to better adhere to warnings to stay off the roads during the two to four inches of snow the area received in the winter storm early Friday, Jan. 10, Cummings reported.
Some motorists slid off roads, being stuck and needing assistance, and a couple of 18-wheelers became stuck, law enforcement said. One traffic crash was reported due to winter weather in Double Springs, but no injuries were reported, according to DS Police Chief Andy Tucker.
A house fire in Sardis near Addison, that occurred just prior to the winter weather moving in late Thursday and into Friday, resulted from a chimney fire and caused the home occupants to be displaced, noted Addison Assistant Fire Chief Brent Porter.
During the height of the winter weather weather, Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri advised city streets had been deemed impassable. Authorities were looking for temperatures above freezing and sunshine today, Saturday, Jan. 11, that would improve conditions.
