DOUBLE SPRINGS - After numerous road blocks to a project on the books for years, improvements to the congested Highway 33/ County Road 24 intersection in Double Springs will begin in March.
Double Springs Mayor Elmo Robinson announced at the town council’s Monday, Jan. 13, meeting that E.O. Byars Construction Inc., of Sulligent will begin the project on March 25, at a cost of $970,130. The project is expected to last 45 working days, extending the turning lane already in place on Highway 33 coming from Double Springs toward County Road 24, which turns toward the campuses of Winston County High School, Double Springs Middle School and Winston Career Academy, town officials said.
The project will not only extend the turning lane but move it over in order to give more sight clearance for motorists that approach 33 from 24 and often are trying to turn without proper sight distance of the oncoming 33 traffic, school and town officials said.
“We’ve had some wrecks out here. We had a young lady get killed out here,” Robinson pointed out. “We’ve got to make it safer for our students coming in and out of school and for our teachers coming in and out of school.
“At some points during the day, it’s a busy intersection,” Robinson stressed.
“It’s not worth losing another life over this.”
