Arley Mayor Chris Tyree
ARLEY - After more than a decade and three terms in office, Arley Mayor Chris Tyree decided this year not to run for re-election.
The last of those terms lasted for five years after the Alabama State Legislature passed a law in 2021 that moved the municipal elections scheduled for 2024 to 2025 to avoid holding both municipal elections and the presidential election in the same year, citing voter fatigue and confusion over multiple voting sites.
Discussing his decision not to run again, Tyree said, "I'm working a lot right now. (There is) a lot going on with work. The other candidate who was going to run (Johnny Taylor) is retired. He's been with the city for a long time. I feel like he's got the city's best interest (in mind), so I decided not to (run)."
At the June meeting of the Arley Town Council, Tyree informed council members that Taylor had retired from the water department, where he had been a grade IV lead operator.
