HALEYVILLE - The City of Haleyville is participating in a pilot program to provide public transportation service for residents on limited incomes or who cannot drive.
The next date for this program to be in operation is this Friday, Aug. 28.
A need, expressed to the city by a local resident, was that the city needed some form of public transportation, stated Mayor Dr. Ray Boshell.
Residents with limited incomes or those without vehicles or who cannot drive, can benefit from this service. A van is being provided by the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments, Boshell said.
The transportation will be provided every two weeks, but if more residents use the service, the days the service is available can become more frequent, Boshell said.
The bus can pick up residents at their homes and take them to Piggly Wiggly, Walmart, the downtown area, banks, medical centers, Lakeland Community Hospital and to Haleyville City Lake, the mayor said.
Those who would like to use the city’s transportation service can call (256) 314-0047. A 24-hour notice must be given ahead of the requested pick up, Boshell stressed.
Residents can call and give the address from where they need to be picked up, as well as their desired location from the above list, city officials emphasized.
When the takes a resident to one of the locations on the list, they inform them of the time they will pick them back up, Boshell said.
The pilot program is no cost to residents who wish to participate, according to Boshell.
The NACOLG vehicle currently being used is handicap accessible, with space for wheelchairs and has a lift for people in wheelchairs, city officials said.
Future dates of NACOLG van pickup service will be September 11 and 26; October 9 and 23; November 6 and 20; December 4 and 18, city officials said.
