HALEYVILLE - What began by working on the assembly floor of a manufactured home plant in 1963, eventually led to retirement 55 years later as owner of a company.
Jerry Perkins, also known as Perk, was born Oct. 8, 1937, in Gadsden, moved to Haleyville when he was “real young,” his mother Ruby having grown up in Needmore. He attended Center and DeFoor schools before attending Haleyville, hitchhiking for his education. He played basketball and baseball under Legendary Coach Herman “Bubba” Scott.
Perkins began work at 12 years old, mowing grass and eventually working at Haleyville Textile Mill and the Haleyville Advertiser when Jay Thornton was editor.
