ALEA to add one digit to new driver license numbers

This sample driver license shows the new eight digit format that will be used for all new driver licenses issued, effective Dec. 1.

MONTGOMERY - The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) soon will add a digit to driver license numbers to accommodate the state’s growing population.

Effective Dec. 1, 2018, all new driver licenses and non-driver IDs will contain eight-digit numbers. The longer numbers already have been used on state-issued non-driver IDs.

The change will not affect Alabama driver license holders who were issued seven-digit numbers. For questions concerning this change, please call 334-242-4400.
