Luke Chambers dodges defenders.
ADDISON - With a lock on a playoff berth, the Addison Bulldogs entered their homecoming game Friday night triumphantly, but had to contend with a determined Tharptown Wildcat team with plans for an upset. The Dawgs were able to pull away, however, with a 37-7 victory.
Beginning on defense, the Dawgs kicked off to Tharptown, which used a combination of short runs and penalties against the home team to advance down the field. After recovering a fumble on second down, senior running back Hunter O'Connor got the first down two plays later after an official measurement by the chain gang. With the Addison defense holding fast, the Wildcats went for it on fourth down again and got the first down again. A facemask penalty against the Dawgs resulted in yet another first down, moving Tharptown deeper into Addison territory. The Wildcats were out of luck on their next fourth down attempt, however, coming up short and resulting in a turnover on downs.
Addison took the air, with quarterback Christian Roberts going to Luke Chambers and Brody Dollar as receivers, but the Wildcats forced a fumble, giving them possession once more. They were unable to capitalize on the turnover, and Addison began their first scoring drive of the game in Tharptown territory at the 45-yard line.
A short pass to Nicholas Rice was good for eight yards, and Weston Smith ran for six yards and the first down two plays later. Switching sides of the field at the beginning of the second quarter, Nelson Martin grabbed a short pass and took it to the house for the touchdown. Justin Mather added on two more points, and the Dawgs were on the board 8-0.
After a three-and-out by Tharptown, Rice took the punt all the way back for a touchdown. Xavier Barley was open in the end zone for the two-point conversion, and the Dawgs were up 16-0 with 8:52 left in the half. Tharptown was able to pick off an Addison pass late in the half, but again failed to capitalize on the turnover, with the half ending with Addison in the lead 16-0.
The Wildcats had a trick up their sleeve as the second half began. Preparing to kick off to Addison, they instead did an onside kick, recovering the ball at the Addison 45-yard-line. Quarterback Yovani Gomez Perez got a pass off to #44, who ran it all the way in for the touchdown. The PAT was good, and Addison's lead was narrowed to 16-7.
The Dawgs answered back quickly. Starting at their own 39-yard line, Chambers ran for 26 yards and a first down at the Wildcat 35. After a keeper by Roberts picked up three more yards, Chambers ran 32 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was good, and Addison was in the lead 24-7.
The Wildcats fumbled twice on their next drive, recovering both times. They weren't so lucky when they put the ball in the air, however, with Rice intercepting a pass deep in Bulldog territory at the 18-yard line. Smith was good for eight yards, then got the first down on the next play. Roberts hit Jorge Smith with a short pass, but a flag pushed the Dawgs back 5 yards. Keeping it on the ground, Smith ran 10 yards to make it 3-and-3, then Rice ran 26 yards for the first down at the Wildcat 37. After a five-yard gain by Smith, Rice got another first down, this time on a 14-yard run. The Wildcat defense tried to stop the Dawgs, but Roberts kept it on fourth down to make it first-and-goal at the 1. Jason Riggs got the touchdown on the next play, with the crowd cheering loudly. Eli Howse's PAT was good, and the score was 31-7 with just seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The Dawgs would get on the board one more time in the fourth quarter. After Chambers returned it to the Tharptown 47 to set up shop, Roberts connected with Sage Smothers, who ran it on for the touchdown. The PAT was no good, and the final was 37-7.
