Winston County man dead after Decatur shooting


Charged with murder is Michael Elijah Vasquez.

DECATUR  - A Decatur man was taken into custody on murder charges relating to the death of a Winston County man in a shooting occurring Jan. 11, on Modaus Road in Decatur.
Michael Elijah Vasquez, 25, of 3210 Modaus Road Southwest, Decatur, has been charged with murder and was incarcerated in the Morgan County Jail, facing a $150,000 bond, according to the Decatur Police Department.
Vasquez was charged in the shooting death of Wayne Harold Jones, 52, of Winston County, law enforcement officials indicated.
Around 1:21 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, Decatur PD received the call of a shooting in the 3200 block of Modaus Road SW, police noted.
Officers responding to the scene found Jones deceased, with detectives arriving and processing the scene.
Through investigation, Vasquez was named as the suspect, and an arrest warrant for murder was obtained, officials noted.
On the morning of Jan. 12, Vasquez turned himself in at the Decatur Police Department, police said.
This shooting is believed by law enforcement to be an isolated incident, but investigation into the case is ongoing.
Although  law enforcement received the call in the early morning hours of Jan. 12, the shooting was believed to have occurred on Jan. 11, according to police reports.
*When a defendant is charged with a crime, the charge is merely an accusation until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
