LYNN – After several months with no police presence, the town of Lynn has hired a police chief, who is no stranger to police work. Bryan Kirkpatrick, former chief deputy with the Winston County Sheriff’s Office, was named chief of police during Lynn’s town meeting Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020. His effective date was the next day, Jan. 22.

Kirkpatrick retired as chief deputy with the sheriff’s office after nearly five years with the title. He began his career in law enforcement with the WCSO as a reserve deputy in 1990. Since that time, he has also had the titles of jailer, deputy, corporal and sergeant.

As the last item on the agenda, an executive session was called to discuss the hiring of a police chief, lasting 19 minutes. Afterwards, council member Brian Heck made a motion to hire Kirkpatrick, which was seconded by Bruce Odom on the council. The motion passed with Kirkpatrick receiving a starting pay of $15.50 per hour.

The former chief of police, Derreck Cagle, resigned shortly after Jeff Stokes resigned as mayor in October.

“Lynn’s a great place,” Kirkpatrick said, noting he lived in Lynn when he began working with the WCSO. “I’ve patrolled here for years. I’m proud to be here, and I’m going to do a great job for them.”

“I’m really happy,” Mayor Earl Gilbert indicated of hiring Kirkpatrick as the police chief. “The town has some protection now. He fits everything we wanted, and he knows what he’s doing already. I think it’s a perfect fit.”
