DOUBLE SPRINGS - Basketball fans from across Winston County descended upon Winston County High School Thursday, Jan. 23, through Saturday, Jan. 25, for the annual Winston County Varsity Basketball Tournament.  The varsity boys and girls championships were both battles between long-time foes Addison and WCHS, with the two schools splitting the victories.
The Addison Lady Bulldogs were crowned county champs after defeating the Lady Jackets in a close game, 47-43.  The varsity boys game was also close, but the WCHS Jackets were the winners, defeating Addison 41-35.
After coming out strong in the first period, the Lady Bulldogs lost their hold on the lead before the half to the Lady Jackets, with the score 23-20, WCHS at halftime.  WCHS held on to a razor-thin 35-34 lead at the end of the third, but the Lady Bulldogs poured it on in the fourth, taking the 47-43 victory.

Kaylee Brummett was the leading Lady Bulldog scorer Saturday night, racking up 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and forced a turnover.  Macy Butler had 13 pounds, five rebounds, three assists and three forced turnovers.  Callie Crider had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.  Savannah Manley had four points and five rebounds, Amylia Cleghorn had four points and two rebounds and Bracie Rodgers had one point.

Makayla Lindsey was the leading scorer for the Lady Jackets, with 14.  She had seven rebounds and one steal. Mackenzie Blackwood had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.  Bella Wakefield had eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists.  Emily Holt had six points, five rebounds and a steal.  Olivia Wright had five points, three rebounds and a steal.  Jazzy Ergle has two points, three rebounds and a steal.  Bailey Kelley had two points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals and Brenna Wakefield had two points.

The Lady Bulldogs arrived in the championship game after defeating Lynn 53-30 Thursday night.  Addison came out fast and furious in the first period of play, racking up 17 points to Lynn’s 5, and the Lady Bulldogs never looked back. Addison went into halftime with a 33-16 lead and finished the third period of play ahead 42-25 before adding on 11 more points in the last period to make the score 53-30.
Macey Butler was the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer Thursday night with 20 points, all scored in the first half.  She also achieved a remarkable goal during the game by scoring her 1,000th career point. Savannah Manley had nine points and four rebounds; Bracie Rodgers had nine points and six steals; Callie Crider had four points, 11 rebounds and four steals;  Anna Grace Luker had four points, seven rebounds and four assists; Amylia Cleghorn had four points and seven rebounds and Hadley Butler had three points.
Phebe Burkett was the leading scorer for the Lynn Lady Bears in the loss, with eight points, two rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Breanna Barton had six points and nine rebounds; Emily Batchelor had six points; Ashley Aldridge had five points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals; Cassidy Dodd had three points, one rebound and one assist; Briana Benson had two points and five rebounds; Ella Brown had five rebounds; Laney Uptain had six rebounds and Jerica Anderson had two rebounds.

Lady Jackets defeat Meek in Friday’s semi-final game

The Lady Jackets toppled the Meek Lady Tigers 50-43 Friday night to make their way into the championship game on Saturday.  Makayla Lindsey was the top scorer in Friday night’s game for the Lady Jackets with 14 points, seven rebounds and one steal.  Mackenzie Blacwood had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.  Bella Wakefield had eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists.  Emily Holt had six points, five rebounds and one steal.  Olivia Wright had five points, three rebounds and one steal.  Jazzy Ergle had two points, three rebounds and one steal.  Bailey Kelley had two points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals and Brenna Wakefield had two points.

Tournament MVP Cade Taylor was the Jackets’ leading scorer for the night with 21 points, going 6/15 at the charity stripe.  He had two assists and an assist on the game.  Brooks Bonds scored 10 points, with two rebounds and three assists.  Austin Owens had four points, 11 rebounds and two assists.  Jacob Hill had four points and two rebounds.  Sy Blanton had two points and two rebounds.  Jordan Martin had a rebound and Nathaniel Gurley had four rebounds.
Logan Wilkins was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer in the loss, with 14 points, seven rebounds and an assist.  Cannon Hiller had 10 points, two rebounds and an assist.  Xavier Barley had four points and three rebounds.  Jesse Brock had three points, three rebounds and an assist.  Christian Roberts had one point and five rebounds.  Quentin Barley had one rebound and Justin Mather had one rebound.

WCHS defeated the Lynn Bears 47-28 Friday night to make it to the championship Saturday.  Cade Taylor was the leading scorer for the Jackets in their Friday night win, with 18 points, three rebounds, three asissts and three steals.  Brooks Bonds had 14 points and two rebounds.  Austin Owens had eight points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Jordan Martin had three points and six rebounds.  Nathaniel Gurley had three points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.  Jacob Hill had one point.  Sy Blanton had a rebound.

Lance Harris was Lynn’s leading scorer in the loss.   He had 14 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.  Brandon Hill had six points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals.  Micah Cagle had two points, three rebounds, three asissts and one steal.  Griffin Lynn had two points, four rebounds and one assist.  
Dalton Gilbert had two points, one rebound, one asisst and two steals and Evan Lamb had two points and two rebounds.
