Officials break down recently passed tax increases

WINSTON COUNTY - The general public has been questioning taxes, after both the City of Haleyville and the Winston County Commission each approved separate taxes toward the funding of health care services in Winston County.
The Haleyville City Council took action at an earlier meeting to approve a one cent sales tax, as well as an increase in the use tax which became effective Feb. 1.
A half cent will be used toward paying back a $1.5 million loan the council also approved toward the purchase of Lakeland Community Hospital by the Haleyville-/Winston County Healthcare Authority. The other half cent will go into an economic development account, which will be a savings account.
