History found in Masonic Lodge cornerstone

DOUBLE SPRINGS - A moment of historical importance not just for the Town of Double Springs but for Winston County took place Saturday, Sept. 28, when a time capsule located behind the cornerstone of the Winston County Masonic Lodge No. 877 was opened after 72 years, revealing some surprising contents.

Dodd is winner in scavenger quest

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Faye Dodd of Haleyville was the winner in the Free State Scavenger Quest, held through the month of September. The drawing was held at the Winston County Archives on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Dodd is shown holding a gift bag containing “Cooked on Smith Lake” from the Arley Women’s Club, and presenting it is Winston County Genealogical Society President Dianne Miller. Dodd also received three volumes of “Winston Roots” and a historical book on Haleyville, along with a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart, a $25 gift certificate to Gateway, a year’s subscription to the Northwest Alabamian and a year’s subscription to the WCGS.

Continentally-divided family reunites

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Many children grow up knowing their father, his looks, his mannerisms and his character. Some grow up with their father across town or even across the nation. Not many, though, grow up without ever seeing their father because he lives in another country, but that is what happened to Georgia Rose Evans, of Stamford, Lincolnshire, England.
