DOUBLE SPRINGS - Several charitable causes will benefit from the annual Winston County fair that’s returning to Double Springs April 23-28, as well as the Fair Queen Pageant that will kick-off the week-long event.
The fair, which will begin its eighth year in Double Springs, will be open Tuesday, April 23 through Friday, April 26, from 5-10 p.m.; Saturday, April 27, from noon until 11 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, from 2-6 p.m., noted Paul Marini, owner of Alabama Fairs.
From now until these dates, various charitable organizations are being urged to contact Marini at (334) 212-4777 or Community Unity organizer Crystal Till at (256) 627-9827.
This way, organizers will divide out the charitable organizations to benefit certain days of the fair, according to organizers.
The fair, as well as the Fair Queen pageant are being sponsored by Community Unity, and the Town of Double Springs.
“When we started Community Unity seven years ago, we couldn’t have imagined what it would grow into,” Till stated.
“We just wanted to have some fun with our community friends. That first year, we thought it would be impossible to get a fair in such a short amount of time. We started in June and hosted a fair in July,” Till continued.
“This year’s fair will be the kickoff for another fun-filled event season,” she added. “The best part of the fair and all of our events is getting to spend time with friends and neighbors and meet new ones.
“We want to personally invite everyone to come join us for fun and food,” Till said.
“We absolutely love it,” Marini said. “We love the opportunity to put smiles on faces. That’s one of the things that keeps us going year after year, to bring joy to the community at a family-affordable price is something we take pride in.”
The price to enter the fair is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under, Marini said.
Once inside the gate, costs of rides will go from $15 to $20 for unlimited access, with an arm band issued, he noted.
The various specials will be spread out over the week, with charitable organizations benefiting at certain times, organizers said.
The fair will sport new rides and activities for all ages, with highlights being a new swinging ship ride, along with such attractions and rides as Silver Streak, Zipper, a ferris wheel, Sizzler and other rides, as well as a variety of food vendors, Marini explained.
The public will also have certain discounts or promotional nights, but those will be announced closer to the event, according to organizers.
Fair Queen pageant
sets stage for fair events
Kicking off the week will be the second annual Fair Queen Pageant, which will be Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at the Rock Family Worship Center on Highway 278 in Double Springs, organizers said.
Registration for the pageant can be found on Facebook at Winston County Fair Queen, or by email to mgflynn82@gmail.com, to receive an application, according to organizer Gracie Flynn.
The pageant is open to girls from birth to age 21. The deadline for entry is April 12, according to Flynn.
The pageant will have nine different age divisions, with a winner chosen from each division, she noted.
A charity queen will be selected based on the contestant who raises the most money for the Our Kids Clothes Closet (one of the recipients of pageant proceeds), according to Flynn.
A People’s Choice winner will be selected, as well, with part of the prize package being the winner receiving a VIP ticket to the fair, she said.
Winners will receive a crown and sash, with sponsorships in the planning stages at this time, organizers said.
“There will be opportunities to win prizes for pageant coaches in the area,” Flynn stated.
