WINSTON COUNTY - Former Winston County Sheriff Horace Moore, publisher of the Northwest Alabamian, announced this week that he will be a Republican candidate for sheriff of Winston County.
“I am excited to get back in law enforcement,” Moore said. “I will be a man of integrity to the sheriff’s office and all citizens of Winston County.”
Moore was appointed Winston County Sheriff by the Honorable Governor Kay Ivey in December, 2020, serving through January, 2022. Prior to serving as sheriff, Moore served Winston County seven years as a reserve deputy.
Moore has a long resumè filled with leadership roles in the county and state. He served on the Alabama Press Association Board of Directors for many years and also served as the APA President, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the prestigious organization.
Currently, Moore serves as treasurer of the E-9-1-1 Board and chairman of the Winston County Industrial Board.
Moore is a member of New Prospect Baptist Church in Haleyville, where he is a trustee and serves on the finance committee.
“I have many plans for the sheriff’s office I will be sharing with you while campaigning, things I was not able to do during my term as sheriff because of the COVID pandemic,” Moore said.
Some of those plans include being out with his deputies at night so he can assist them, which will also help him to always know what they are encountering.
“I will be a working sheriff, just like I was before,” Moore said. “I will respond to ALL CALLS, regardless.”
There is no place for crime in Winston County, Moore believes.
“Drugs, thefts, child abuse, sex offenders, DUIs - I have zero tolerance for them,” Moore said.
Moore believes in treating everyone with respect and expects all employees within the sheriff’s office to follow this rule.
“I will show respect for all people, including inmates. My jail corrections officers will treat inmates with respect and courtesy. My dispatchers will handle calls with respect and show courtesy to everyone,” Moore said.
Moore plans to offer inmates access to a chaplain when needed and to have pastors come and share the Word of God with inmates if they choose to hear it.
Moore welcomes the community to get involved helping him to improve the sheriff’s office’s performance.
“I will look for ways to help our citizens. I will not look for ways to NOT help them, as long as the issue falls under the rule of law,” Moore said. “I will manage the sheriff’s office, using common sense.”
Moore plans to work 100 percent with the 25th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, all judges, the circuit clerk, all police chiefs, all fire departments, all rescue squads and all other first responders to make Winston County safer and lower the crime rate.
“The Winston County Sheriff’s Office does not belong to the sheriff or the Winston County Commission. It belongs to you, the Citizens of Winston County,” Moore said.
