ARLEY - The Arley Volunteer Fire Department is provided its residents with a public reminder today, commemorating 9/11 Patriot Day at both of its operating locations.
At the Arley Fire Department’s main station on Helicon Road, the department’s newest engine is decorated with patriotic banners and flags augmented with sets of turnout gear in front of the truck. At Arley’s Station #2 in the Wilson Bend Community, an older engine similarly is displaying flags, banners and folded turnout gear. Both stations have donned US Flags at half mast.
Arley Fire Chief James Rickett stated the folded turnout gear is in memory of the 343 firefighters who perished in the 9/11 attack. In addition, over the ensuing 18 years, the Uniformed Firefighters Association of New York has identified another 204 FDNY firefighters who have died due to cancers caused from the toxins related to the attack.
Technically labeled the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance, September 11, was formally signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 18, 2001. (Article by Bob Cooper, PIO, Arley Fire Department)
