North Alabama Trails & Recreation program to partner with local organizations

WINSTON COUNTY - A new program focused on improving outdoor recreation to make North Alabama “a recreation destination” has been formed by the Alabama Mountains, Rivers and Valleys Resource Conservation and Development Council. The new program, NATR, which stands for North Alabama Trails & Recreation, will partner with organizations and individuals in eighteen counties, including Winston.

Its mission is to provide expertise, funds and labor to build new recreation infrastructure and to improve and increase awareness of existing trails and outdoor recreation sites in North Alabama.

Programs Manager Jared Carter of the RC&D spoke this morning, Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Winston County Natural Resources Council’s regular meeting about the benefits and opportunities NATR will offer members.

Interested parties in attendance included Double Springs Mayor Elmo Robinson and representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, the Alabama Forestry Commission, the Industrial Development Authority of Winston County, the Winston County Extension Service, the North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments and Wild Alabama, among others.

More information about NATR and further details of the Winston County Natural Resources Council meeting will be in future issues of the Alabamian.
