HALEYVILLE    -  Current Winston County Commissioner for District 2 David Cummings will take over as commission chairman November 13, meaning the resulting vacancy in the district 2 seat will need to be addressed.
Cummings addressed this and other topics, some of which brought strong reactions and concerns from the audience, when he was keynote speaker at the Haleyville Area Chamber of Commerce meeting September 6.
“I am chairman-elect and I expect to go from a part-time to a full-time position for the county.  I expect to participate in meetings like this throughout the county. That’s my goal,” Cummings began.
Since Cummings will officially take the commission chairman’s seat November 13, he and current chairman Roger Hayes have been working, “to put our heads together on how we are going to do this,” Cummings explained.
“Roger has told me that if I needed him in the future, to call him,” Cummings said. “And I will call him, I promise you. He’s been through a lot of rodeo.  It is just going to take the whole county working together.
“I want to work as hard for Addison and Arley as I do for Haleyville,” Cummings continued. “I want to be chairman for the whole county.”
Cummings then explained the process by which the upcoming district 2 seat vacancy will be addressed.
“The governor’s office will not start the process of putting a new commissioner in my position now,” said Cummings, adding the appointment would be for the final two years of the term for the district 2 seat.
“They will not start taking resumes or anything until November 13,” Cummings emphasized. “They can’t take anything or do anything until I make a vacancy.
“There is going to be a few weeks without a district 2 commissioner,” Cummings confirmed. “So I feel like I will probably be doing both jobs until they get someone appointed into that position.”
