ARLEY - Arley Fire Chief James Rickett told Mayor Chris Tyree and the Arley Town Council at its Monday, Sept. 8, meeting that he will be retiring as chief at the start of next year, but will continue to serve in the fire department.
He thanked the council and mayor for their support over the years.
"Nobody deserves (retirement) more than (you and your wife)," said Council Member Devin Guthrie.
"I really hate to see you go but really appreciate (what you've done)," said Council Member Roger Fincher said.
"You've done a fine job," Council Member Bobby Smith said. "You went above and beyond."
Later in the meeting, the council voted to hire Dexter Woodward to work in water distribution at a starting pay of $18.21 per hour increasing to $19.21 after six months and to $20.21 after a year with all members present in favor. Council Member Justin Harbison was not present.
The council had previously voted to post that job opening at its Aug. 4 meeting.
This month, the council also voted with all present in favor to approve Clifton Rudd as lead operator at the water plant for a six month period that started on June 1.
The mayor told the council he'd received a quote from Bart Meyers to pressure wash the picnic tables and concrete at the pavilion in Hamner Park for $1,000. He said the town might need to buy sealer if none was donated to them.
The council voted to spend up to $1,200 on the pressure washing with all present in favor.
Tyree said the water department's service contract with HACH was coming up for renewal in October or November and suggested changing to Analytical Water Solutions. All present voted in favor of the change.
Tyree said the Arley Women's Club will hold Trunk or Treat in Hamner Park on Thursday, Oct. 30, and that Town Hall and Traditions Bank would also give out candy that night.
