HALEYVILLE - A Demolition crew had 13th Avenue by the post office closed Friday, March 22, to tear down the old Alfa building.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area for the next several hours.

The old building, formerly known as Henry E. McNutt building, was used until recently when a new building was built behind the old one. The new building is named the Carl O. Godsey building.

The building being torn down was built in 1972 with Architect Jack W. Nix and Contractor Renfroe Construction Company. Before the new one was built, its appraised value was $126,920.

“When they built this building originally, they put a flat roof on it,” Haynes mentioned. “We started having leaks. So much damage has already been done, and this building has all kinds of mold,” Haynes said.

To tear out every wall and rebuild it back was going to cost about $90,000, according to Haynes. With that information, it was decided a new building would be built.

The move to the new building took place December, 2018.
