Calendars released for Winston County Schools

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Calendars for the school years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 have been released by the Winston County Board of Education, it was learned at the monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 2.

For the 2019-2020 year, the first day for students to begin the year is Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019. The last day, being a semester exam day, is Thursday, May 21, 2020.

The four nine weeks are as follows: first, Sept. 5, 2019; second, Nov. 7, 2019; third, Feb. 7, 2020 and fourth April 16, 2020. The report card dates are Oct. 10, 2019; Jan 9, 2020; March 12, 2020 and May 22, 2020.

In other business, payroll and expenditures were approved, with the total being $2,109,896.62. Bank reconciliations and financial statements were approved for January 2019, along with the payroll for April 26.

The board approved Superintendent Greg Pendley to solicit bids for re-roofing projects at both Addison Elementary and High schools.

“This is from the insurance from the storm that did the hail damage,” Joey Boteler, board president, clarified to the audience.

The purchase of a one ton Ford Truck from Tallassee Automotive was approved for $39,019.

“It’s going to be a bedded truck,” Pendley said. It is also a state truck with a fifth wheel, he further explained.

The following individuals were approved for retirement effective June 1, 2019: Susan Holeman, Diana Cole, Gale Hall and Susette Rohde. Other changes to personnel included hiring Alisha Shorknes as pre-K aide at Addison Elementary School; approving Bradley Comeens as a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Winston County High School and Becky Cobb as boys’ track coach for WCHS effective April 2; approving Juli Veal as a volunteer assistant track coach at WCHS effective April 2 and accepting the resignation of Mark Mitchell as boys’ track coach.

The CSFO and contracted services and substitute lists were approved as well.

The next board meeting will be Thursday, May 2, at 5 p.m. at the board of education building.
