History unearthed at Lynn Schools

LYNN - History has literally been unearthed at Lynn Schools, when bricks from the high school that burned in 1969 were found while the old field house was being torn down to construct a new multi-purpose facility on campus.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Long-time teachers with a combined experience between 150-200 years have announced their retirement from Winston County Schools, creating adjustments for the board of education as it prepares for a new school year in August.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Good news came to the Winston County Board of Education, at their Monday, April 28, meeting, when they received a “materially correct” audit report, meaning no financial discrepancies were found by the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - The future of long-time Addison High School football coach David Smothers is uncertain, with Smothers defending his strong coaching record and refuting ongoing allegations at the January 28, Winston County Board of Education meeting.

Discrepancies found in Winston County Board of Education audit

Denise H. Olive, auditor with the Examiners of Public Accounts, reported two financial discrepancies in Winston County Schools' 2022-2023 audit.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Over $1 million in financial discrepancies were noted in a report of the Winston County Schools audit for 2022-2023.

Two major findings of the Winston County Schools audit for the period of 2022-2023 showed over $932,000 in financial transactions not recorded, as well as over $301,000 expended for bus fuel without letting bids, according to a summary of the audit findings.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Since funding that school systems have been receiving through Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief will be ending in 2024, school officials are asking if funding will continue for personnel paid by ESSER funds.
