Local COVID update - Tuesday, March 17, 2020

WINSTON COUNTY - As of 10:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, March 17, Alabama had 36 confirmed cases of Coronavirus-2019, or COVID-19.  There have been no deaths reported from in Alabama from the virus.  There are still no confirmed cases in Northwest Alabama.  The only cases in north Alabama are in Limestone and Madison counties, with one reported in each county.

In other related news:

• Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri proclaimed a State of Local Emergency Friday, March 13, in response to President Donald Trump declaring a National State of Emergency and Governor Kay Ivey declaring a State of Emergency.  Code of Alabama 31-9-10 (1975) allows political subdivisions such as cities to declare a state of local emergency and also to waive the procedures and formalities otherwise required of political subdivisions by law, including but not limited to:

a. Performance of public work and taking whatever prudent action is necessary to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the community;

b. Entering into contracts;

c. Incurring obligations;

d. Employment of temporary workers;

e. Utilization of volunteer workers;

f. Rental of equipment;

g. Acquisition and distribution, with or without compensation, or supplies, materials and facilities;

h. Appropriation and expenditure of public funds;

i. Potential closure of city streets.

 

• Governor Kay Ivey has asked as many state employees as possible to work from home for the next two weeks.  The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources states that all Alabama State Parks and associated facilities remain open with the exception of cave tours at Rickwood and Cathedral Caverns.  State Public Fishing Lakes are also open.
