HAMILTON - The Alabama Department of Corrections was informed via self-reporting that two staff members employed at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka, one staff member employed at Hamilton Aged and Infirmed in Hamilton and one staff member employed at Bullock Correctional Facility in Union Springs have tested positive for COVID-19. These four individuals promptly self-quarantined under the direction of their healthcare providers.
The ADOC’s Office of Health Services has initiated an investigation to determine which, if any, ADOC inmates or employees may have had direct, prolonged exposure to these staff members. Upon completing the appropriate follow-up interviews and due diligence, OHS will advise any exposed staff members to contact their healthcare providers and self-quarantine for the recommended 14-day period, or as advised by their healthcare providers.
Forty-five COVID-19 cases among ADOC staff and contracted staff remain active. Ten staff members who previously self-reported a positive test have been cleared by medical providers to return to work.
The ADOC has confirmed that two inmates housed at Kilby Correctional Facility have tested positive for COVID-19. Eleven total cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among Alabama's inmate population, two of which remain active.
These two inmates have been housed for an extended period of time in the infirmary at Kilby for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions. After testing positive for COVID-19, both inmates were promptly transferred and admitted to a local hospital, where they remain for treatment.
Upon completing a consultation with the State Medical Director at ADOC’s contracted health services provider, the decision was made to place the infirmary at Kilby on level-one quarantine. While under level-one quarantine, inmates in the infirmary will be monitored closely for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, including taking and recording of temperatures twice per day. Infirmary staff will continue to wear appropriate personal protective equipment and measures will be taken should an inmate become symptomatic in accordance with CDC guidelines for COVID-19.
Finally, the ADOC has begun the process of resuming many rehabilitative programs led by ADOC and contracted health services staff within its facilities. To safely resume these programs, all participating staff members and inmates are required to wear face masks during program facilitation and maintain six feet of distance from one another. Classes have been scheduled to allow for reduced capacity, and classroom furniture has been arranged accordingly to accommodate for social distancing. Hand sanitizer is available to all participants during class, and classrooms are sanitized extensively each day.
At this time, volunteer-led rehabilitative programs remain suspended.
