Qualifying ends for Haleyville Board of Education election

HALEYVILLE - Qualifying ended Tuesday, May 24, at 5 p.m. for the three places on the Haleyville Board of Education that will be up for election July 12.

For Place 2, candidates who qualified are Boo Haughton and Valeria Taylor.  This seat has been open since Barry Burleson resigned last year.

For Place 4, incumbent Kris Burleson will face Brian Vickery.

For Place 5, incumbent Donna Jones is the only one who qualified.

HALEYVILLE - Members of the Haleyville Board of Education had questions for Mayor Ken Sunseri, a special guest at their Nov. 8, work session, about the steps that should be followed to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Barry Burleson.

HALEYVILLE - Safety concerns relating to crowds gathering at certain events sponsored by Haleyville City Schools have been brought into question, in sight of the ever-present COVID-19 pandemic that is resulting in deaths of community residents, and students and faculty members being quarantined.

HALEYVILLE - Financial supplements for coaches at Haleyville City Schools were brought into question by Haleyville School Board Member Barry Burleson Sept. 14, with Burleson saying that taxpayer dollars are funding at least $140,000 instead of a combination of positions to save money.

HALEYVILLE    - A unanimous vote of the Haleyville Board of Education approved a three-year non-probationary contract of Haleyville High School Principal Davey Reed  effective July 1 through June 30, 2023, as one of numerous personnel items approved at the Thursday, June 25 meeting.

HALEYVILLE  - School officials are expressing concern that the closure of schools due to the Coronavirus or COVID-19 will be extended past the April 6 deadline, which would result in multiple complications administrators and staff would have to address.

HALEYVILLE  - The Haleyville Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Feb. 25, proved to be both emotional and rewarding for Chere Fetter, director of instructional services, who was honored with this month’s Serve with Pride award.
